Should I hire a car?

There is tons to see in the area, from beaches, wineries, markets, music festivals, carnivals, castles, and rivers. If you want to make the absolute most of your trip then car hire is advisable. However, it IS possible to get to Magalas by public transport – there are buses and (occasionally) trains. Or you could have a wonderful holiday by bike if you prefer. Take your pick.

Where can I park?

There is on-street parking just 25 metres down the hill from the house. It is a very quiet one-way street so there is almost always somewhere to park free of charge.

Check-In/Out

We’ll be thrilled to welcome you after 4pm on the day of your arrival. Check out will be no later than 10am on departure day. We will need to see your passport and take your car registration number on arrival. Please send a text to +33 6 28 21 36 24 when you are an hour away from the house. Then we’ll meet you with the keys and show you where everything is.

Is there internet access?

Yes, there is wifi throughout the house. We’ll give you the password when you arrive. Don’t forget your iPad, iPhone, laptop, French adapters and all that stuff. If you want to watch UK TV or catch-up via your iPad or laptop, we suggest you subscribe to TunnelBear or HideMyAss before you come. The TV is also a DVD player and there is a Bluetooth speaker for your devices in the kitchen/sitting room.

Is there a TV?

Yes, there is a small TV with integral DVD. But why would you want to watch TV on your holidays? Ah, yes, to improve your French! There are a couple of news channels in English, otherwise we recommend French news if you really want to know what’s going on. There are several DVDs in English available for you too.

What about a welcome hamper?

We provide you with the basics like tea, coffee, condiments and sugar. However, we can also provide you with a basket of goodies to set you on your way. It includes a bottle of fresh orange juice, a bottle of wine, mineral water, a jar of conserve, two bags of aperitif snacks, chocolate, fruit, cheese, six eggs, ground coffee, tea, milk and bread at 45 euros . We also offer a bumper hamper which includes all of the above PLUS a freshly roasted chicken, a bag of salad and a bottle of champagne at 85 euros. Do contact us in advance if you’d like this option.

Equipment

The house has all the bedding, towels, cutlery, utensils and glasses that you’ll need for your stay. We start you off with several loo rolls, but expect you to buy some more if there aren’t enough. There is a clothes airer in the cellar. We’ll leave you with dishwasher liquid and some washing powder. However, you might need to top it up if you stay for a while.

Is there a BBQ?

We have the cutest BBQ ready for you to use. We’ll kick you off with some charcoal and matches, then we’ll ask you to supply any more that you need. There are BBQ tools and you can use the crockery from the house. All you’ll need to supply is the food!! There’s a great little market on Wednesdays so bring your BBQ recipes with you.

Are there books and games?

There is a bookshelf on the first floor full of books and games to entertain you while you while away some relaxing time in the courtyard or on the sofa. Most of the books are in English.

The beach

You will be about a 30 minute drive from the nearest Mediterranean beach – and they spread all the way along the coastline from Italy to Spain so you have plenty to choose from. We will supply you with beach towels, a beach umbrella and a cool bag to keep your picnic chilled.

Picnic hamper and rug?

You’ll find a picnic hamper and rug in the house – perfect for those lazy days relaxing in a sunny vineyard or the mountains nearby.

Are there any shops?

Yes, Magalas is a small town with all the necessary shops and amenities. Within a 200 metre walk of the house you’ll find restaurants, takeaways, bars, baker/tea room, grocer, tobacconist, post office, pharmacy, bank with an ATM and everything you’d need for daily living. There’s a vibrant market on Wednesday mornings. Within five-minute drive there is a shopping zone with two large supermarkets, petrol station, a butcher’s, a baker’s, DIY store and so on. For city shopping there is Béziers (20 minute drive) and Montpellier (40 minute drive).

Can I bring my pet snake or dog?

Sadly not. Some of our guests are allergic to animals so we keep it a pet-free home.

Bikes

We don’t keep a supply of bikes for guests as everyone is a different size and, frankly, keeping bikes in tip-top condition is a skill we don’t have. So we suggest that you contact the excellent VéloRoo in St Geniès de Fontedit, run by Aussie couple, Steve Prokop & Julia Petts. They will take all your details and deliver perfect bikes to the house for you to use. You can find them at VéloRoo. Please tell them we recommended them to you. Make sure you book your bike well in advance if you are coming during the summer months. There is ample space to store bikes safely in the cellar which has access directly onto the path leading to the house.

Cleaning

The house will be spotless when you arrive. We’d really love it if you could take care of things as if they were your own. We don’t make a charge for cleaning so we’d be grateful if you could return the favour by leaving the house as clean you find it.

Is there aircon?

We do not have air-conditioning in the house but there is a state of the art Dyson tower fan in the bedroom for the hottest nights of the summer months. The house benefits from having an open view , so when all the windows are open the fresh breezes of the night come gently through the house. There are shutters on the windows and the local way of dealing with heat is to close the shutters during the day to keep the sun out, then to throw everything wide open at night. It’s worked for us in our 17 years of living in the Languedoc. We hope it works for you too.

Pillows

All our pillows are hypo-allergenic.

Security deposit

We will ask you to pay a 100 euro security deposit on booking. This will be used if anything is broken or damaged. However, if everything is left as you found it we will be happy to refund your deposit promptly.
